Even though I won't be able to do art in college, I hope to continue it as a hobby. This class has taught me how to work on deadlines and how important it is to stay on task. It has also introduced me to some awesome people, which is cool. Also, having our own art show was a very cool experience, something I'll probably never do again, but it was interesting and fun. My AP Art experience has been very fun and rewarding.
Looking back on the year, I am glad that I was able to experience this class. Although it was fast paced, I enjoyed it. The first semester of Art was very interesting. I found it very rewarding to try out different techniques. Without that experience, I probably wouldn't have wanted to do Prismacolor for pretty much my whole concentration. I was also able to improve my oil painting.

For the song Steamroller Blues, I drew a steamroller that was from that time period. And contrary to the title of the song, which sounds like it would be sad, the song is very happy. So that is why I drew two people kissing, however they are wearing blue to relate back to the title. I started off with just the steamroller, and I really liked how it was turning out. And then I got to the background, and I feel like I lost it. The colors dulled out the steamroller. And the sky isn't well blended. So besides the background, I love it. I like the steamroller and the way the people turned out. It's just the background. I didn't know what to do and I think I went the wrong direction. Despite that, I think it turned out okay.
For the song In The Ghetto, I drew a broken down ghetto house with some old kid's bike in front. Since the song is basically about a kid growing up in the ghetto, I decided to add the bike to show that. I put graffiti on the house to show that it was ghetto. I like the way this piece turned out. I think the spray paint and lack of grass and wood on the window adds to the ghetto part of the piece. I think the trees in the background also turned out well. It's hard to see, but on the column in the middle of the piece, there is an orange "EP" spray painted on it, which stands for Elvis Presley. I think the colors turned out really nice. I also like the composition of the piece. I like how the house is somewhat cut off, so it makes it like incomplete like the ghetto is. I like the way it turned out.
For Blue Suede Shoes, I did a prismacolor drawing of multiple aspects of the song. I drew money in the bottom left corner for the lyrics "One for the money", a stage for "two for the show", and a cat for "go cat go". The shoes are high heels to connect it back to me because I am a girl. I added the vinyl of Elvis Presley, but I said "King" to keep it more lowkey. I think the shoes turned out well. And I think the curtain looks good. The cat somewhat looks flat, but it just might be me being picky. I think this drawing is good. I like how the lyrics of the song are really represented visually in this piece. This is my most unplanned piece and I like it.
For Burning Love, I didn't know what to do. I was thinking of maybe doing a heart on fire or something like that but it didn't feel right. But during spring break, I saw the "Love's" gas station sign and thought "what if I paint that on fire?". So that happened. I think this is one of my most "clear" pieces to the actual song. Well fire is hard to paint. Especially if the background is already painted and you're trying to use yellow. I learned that during this project. But I like the way this piece turned out. I think it portrays the song in a more literal way than interpretive, which is different than I think all of my other pieces. I like the way the trees turned out and I added the telephone wires to balance out the painting. Overall, I like this painting and I think it turned out well.
For Fever, I drew a boy kissing a girl and she has a thermometer to show that she's getting a fever from his kiss. In the background, I needed something to fill in there, so I put Elvis's house in the background to connect it to him. This is not one of my favorite pieces. The skin on the faces isn't very smooth and the background looks very illustrated and unrealistic which disappointed me. I like how I added red to the cheeks and a barely noticeable amount to the chin to show that her temperature is rising. It was really difficult to get the skin tone for this piece. And the background. But, I still think that this drawing is a really good representation of the song so I'm happy about that.
For Heartbreak Hotel, I did a street sign pointing towards a hotel looking building that I found somewhere in Raleigh. I chose watercolor because I thought it would be an easy piece to do it with because it didn't require a lot detail since the hotel was in the background. I really like how the colors turned out. I didn't plan on keeping the colors kind of dull and faded, but I am glad they ended up like that. I think it adds to the ambiance of the song which is sorrow and stuff. I think the way the street sign has a perspective towards the building, it really draws your eye from the left side of the painting towards the building. I tried to make the street sign look old and kind of falling apart, and I don't know if I accomplished that too well, but I still really like the way it turned out. I think by putting blue in the mountains in the back carries the blue in the street sign through the whole piece and keeps a solemn mood to the piece. Also, it helped prevent my piece from looking too green.
For this song, I drew hands dropping off an envelope that has the "return to sender" symbol on it. The mailbox I used is from the mailbox in downtown Apex. Originally in the picture, the brick is white but I thought the red brick would add more to the picture. This project is one of my favorites. I love how bright and shiny the blue mailbox appears against the dark red brick. I think the perspective is cool too, how the brick is kinda at a slant like it's really from the point of view of the person dropping off the letter. The skin was difficult at first. I had to mix three colors and then add dark brown to do shadows. My hand model apparently has a lot of veins and stuff, so that was more difficult to capture, but I think by just drawing and shading what I saw, I think it turned out really well. I think the blue in the mailbox turned out very well blended. I'm glad I didn't use black as much as I used dark blue in the shadows of the mailbox, I think the black would've been too overwhelming since it would be the only black featured in the drawing.
Overall, I think the drawing turned out very good and I really love it. For the song memories, I decided to do another prisma color. I find myself gravitating towards prismas as I continue because they are so fun and great to use. It was kind of hard to think of how to illustrate a concept like memories, so I decided to do a photograph. Photos are a way to look back on old memories so I did that. I did two different hands holding it, one is a guy's hand and one is a girl's, to connect the drawing to the overall meaning of the song, which is two people in love. In the song, Elvis sings "sweetened through the ages just like wine", so I drew some wine glasses with "wine" (but if you pay attention to the actual wine bottle it says "Sparkling Grape Juice", so it gives it a personal twist since I am not old enough to drink wine). In the song he also mentions how memories settle to the ground "like autumn leaves" so on the wine bottle I drew autumn leaves. The background in the drawing is a light purple, inspired by the line in the song "a twilight trimmed in purple haze". The 1968 at the bottom of the photograph is the year the song was published. Originally, the picture I took of the photograph, the plant was on the other side, but I switched it all around so the plant would be on the opposite side of the green wine bottle. I'm glad I did that because I think it evens out the drawing. I like the wood texture, I think that turned out well. Although this isn't one of my favorites, overall I like it and I think it looks good. |
